Bowel movements can be attributed to many disease conditions.

Definition: Abnormal bowel movements, usually referred to abnormal bowel movements which includes:

 

- No defecation, difficulty in defecation; hard stool (dry)-

- The stool is hard at the beginning followed by sloppy stool

- Spontaneous diarrhoea; sloppy stool

-Tenesmus (abdominal urgency with heaviness in the rectum)

- Clear food diarrhoea

- Blood in the stool with pus

- Black and tarry stool

There are many major factors affecting bowel movements

- Gastrointestinal qi strength and its direction of movement

- Gastrointestinal internal environment (wind, cold, dampness and fire)

- Other visceral functions: liver dispersion, lung diffusion and depurating; spleen movement; and kidney opening and closing

- The daily nature and quantity of food intake and diet
